Bear Creek School Technology Protocol
The Vision of Bear Creek
Our students use technology to learn. Technology is essential to facilitate the creative problem solving, information fluency, critical thinking skills, and collaboration that we see in today’s world. While we want our students to be active contributors in our connected world, we also want them to be safe, legal and responsible.
How We Plan To Use Technology
The integrated information technology program at Bear Creek School develops the literacy skills our students need in order to contribute in a connected world. We use technology to facilitate creativity and innovation. We use technology to support communication and collaboration. We use technology to extend research and develop information fluency. We want our students to have a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. We believe technology to be transformative. We will create a safe online environment for all of our students.
Our Hardware and Software
Our students can now access the Internet via both wired and wireless connections throughout the school. Bear Creek students have access to a standard suite of software to support their learning needs, which may include class websites, district blogs for students, ipad applications (Apps) and multiple user platforms. Through this environment, students have the opportunity to collaborate with one another, and further their own knowledge in a safe and effective way.
Personal Learning Devices
Since Bear Creek is now wireless, we are looking at ways we can integrate personal devices as part of the learning tools available for students. To best prepare our students for their future, we want to provide rich learning activities through this medium, as well as others. The more opportunities students have to share their learning, the more opportunities they have to be successful.
Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
The acceptable use policy (AUP) supports our vision of technology use and upholds in our students a strong sense of digital citizenship and identity. Please review this policy with your child. We are all venturing into new “Technological Territory”!
If you have any questions or concerns about the Bear Creek technology protocol, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or the school administration.
Sincerely,
Mrs. E. Bertholm, Principal

Being A Digital Citizen
At Bear Creek School, we use information and technology in safe, legal and responsible ways. It is important that we educate our students on what this means. This is shared responsibility between home and school, and will continue throughout our work.
Students' Goals for Technology at Bear Creek:
Respect Yourself:
Select online names that are appropriate. Consider the information and images that are posted online.
Protect Yourself:
Do not publish personal details, contact details or a schedule of your activities. Choose sites that are educationally appropriate for your learning and your age.
Respect Others:
Do not use technologies to bully or tease other people.
Protect Others:
Protect others by reporting abuse and not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications.
Respect Intellectual Property:
Suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, media, etc.
Protect Intellectual Property:
Request to use the software and media that others produce.
Expectations For Using Personal Devices At School
Personal devices are defined as any technological tool that enhances learning at school – it is all about the learning! These may include devices such as laptops, tablets, ipads, ipods or iphones. Teachers will provide the structure and instructions for students to bring their personal devices to school, but the general school expectations are:
Students must have parental permission before bringing a personal learning device to school.
Personal learning devices are to stay in the classroom or learning environment. They will not be allowed outside during social or play times, such as recess or lunch.
Students are responsible for any lost, damaged or stolen items.
Ensure that the device’s security settings are ON before sending it to school with your child.
All personal learning devices must go home at the end of each day. The school is not responsible for personal devices left at school as they are not school property.
